BlackBerry, a mobile communications solutions provider, has received approval from the provincial government of Ontario, Canada, to test self-driving cars on Canadian public roads, according to a report on Reuters.
Citing a statement from Ontario, the program – a first for the country – will include testing of automated vehicles by the University of Waterloo, and the Erwin Hymer Group auto manufacturer, the report said.
BlackBerry’s QNX software development subsidiary and the University of Waterloo will partner with Ford Motor’s (F) Lincoln cars, while Erwin Hymer Group will work with Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz vans, the report stated further.
The report added that it is up to the companies when they will to begin their tests. BBRY shares were down marginally and F shares were down nearly 1% in Monday’s recent trading.
